Le Boat has launched a Skipper for Hire program for guests who would like more hands-on training ahead of their do-it-yourself boating experience.
The program enables guests sailing on the Canal du Midi in southern France to hire a professional skipper who will accompany them on the first day of their voyage and assist with piloting the boat.
Le Boat skippers provide guests with hands-on instruction on boat operation, navigation techniques and maneuvering through locks for up to seven hours for $199 per day. The trained pilots bring their own lunch and refreshments onboard, and the company arranges their disembarkation at a suitable location by the end of the day. Le Boat also assumes liability for any accidental damage incurred while the skipper is on board.
A response to feedback
The company said it created the program after hearing feedback from guests who found the task of learning how to drive their own boat intimidating and wanted more comprehensive training.
"Many of our North American guests have expressed interest in having a skipper available as the idea of piloting a boat for the first time can be daunting," said Lisa McLean, long-haul marketing manager for Le Boat. "In response to this feedback, our Skipper for Hire program aims to enhance the boating experience and provide unparalleled support to our valued guests."
The program is available only on Canal du Midi itineraries for
departures in 2025, and only from Le Boat's bases in Castelnaudary,
Carcassonne (Trebes), Homps and Port Cassafieres.
Le Boat said that if the program on the Canal du Midi is successful, it plans to expand the program to other destinations in Europe or Canada.
